The key objectives of the ”Elie Wiesel” National Institute for the Study of the Holocaust in Romania refer to studying the history of the Holocaust in Romania and promoting remembrance through research and education. For the last 20 years, the ”Elie Wiesel” Institute has (re)connected the Romanian public with its past, uncovering parts of Romania`s history that for a long time were forgotten or ignored. As the only research organization in Romania dedicated to the history of the Holocaust and also a public entity, the Institute plays a key role in promoting Holocaust remembrance. It does this primarily through research projects and secondly by supporting research initiatives via educational, cultural, and memorial activities.
ECHOES` project and the ”Elie Wiesel” Institute’s mission
By exploiting the latest technological advancements, ECHOES leverages the Institute`s expertise in academic research and in developing educational instruments for building Holocaust remembrance, aligning this way the project`s scope of preserving and transmitting Holocaust history with the Institute`s mission in promoting remembrance.
ECHOES` societal impact
Oral testimonies and dialogue with survivors have a greater impact on contemporary audiences who value the connection with real people and the primary source instead of reading or being delivered impersonal historical facts or statistic data. Considering the emphasis the younger generation places on self-informing and openly interacting with diverse sources, ECHOES safeguards memory by offering learners an interactive experience, encouraging them to reflect and connect with recent history, stimulating empathy, and civic attitudes.
Ensuring accuracy of the integrated data through research and a broader reach through memorial activities, the Institute supports ECHOES` scope of preserving Holocaust memory.
