The project ECHOES – Echoes of Memory: Interactive conversations with holocaust survivors through AI, marks a groundbreaking step in preserving and transmitting Holocaust history, while exploiting the latest technological advancements of artificial intelligence for the progress of social sciences and history remembrance.  With fewer surviving survivors, ECHOES intends to preserve their voices, testimonies and teachings for future generations. Reaping the recent artificial intelligence’s rise and its advantages, Echoes of Memory offers a novel, while ethically vigilant way of interacting with one of the darkest yet significant periods of European history. A major objective is not only to connect young people with history but also to carefully examine the limits and ethical responsibilities of using technology to carry forward human memory. This project is as much about honoring the past as it is about thoughtfully shaping the ways learners can evolve from it. ECHOES enables future generations to question, learn deeper and connect on a personal level with the past.Through AI-powered conversational agents and simulating interactions with Holocaust survivors, learners will be able to explore survivor testimonies in an interactive, personalized, and emotionally engaging manner. This approach converts studying about the Holocaust from mere reading, hearing, to actually having a real conversation.

How does ECHOES serve THL’s mission?

THL’s primary role is to blend academic discovery with industrial application and bring in the forefront technical solutions that offer great impact on a wide spectrum of industries and society itself. ECHOES follows this mission in two ways: a) applying AI for social good b) leading conversational systems

Building on Artificial Intelligence and Software Development expertise, THL will outline, build and deliver robust conversational systems that convincingly portray survivor testimonies with a sense of sensitivity and authenticity. The AI agents will be thoroughly trained against curated historical materials and interviews of survivors, maintaining factual integrity and ethical soundness. 

Is the research connected to real-world implications?

ECHOES further extends THL’s ongoing research into complex, data-driven systems with real-world implementation, complementing recent activities like the ODIN smart hospital project and broader involvement in European AI adoption initiatives like SoliDAIR and more broadly a) deepening its expertise in NLP and MLOps, b) focusing on sensitive data handling

By carefully collecting and structuring data, educators and historians, through AI interactions, are prioritising meaningful historical engagement, helping the learner to focus on the questions that will deepen their understanding and reflection.

ECHOES enables future generations to question and connect on a personal level with the past.

Echoes of Memory shows how new technologies can aid our memory to recollect and learn from what happened before. The project uses AI to archive and convey survivors’ voices, so their testimonies continue to evoke empathy and defy intolerance for years to come.
